Daniel Lopatin is preparing to release Again, his tenth album as Oneohtrix Point Never. The album is out September 29 via Warp, and today sees the release of its first single, “A Barely Lit Path.”
If you were expecting a turn towards pop after Lopatin’s work as executive producer on The Weeknd‘s Dawn FM, “A Barely Lit Path” indicates that Lopatin is staying firmly in his abstract bag. The song begins with like cybernetic hymn, all glitchy vocals and fragmented organ, before evolving into something like a Phillip Glass score for a movie about black holes.
Alongside the new music is a video directed by Freeka Tet (Lopatin handled the treatment alongside Tet); it depicts a couple of crash test dummies on a road trip gone wrong, and it’s easily one of my favorite visuals of the year. Watch below.
